Cal Baseball Tops Chicago State, 5-4

BERKELEY - Junior outfielder Brian Celsi had another outstanding day at the plate for Cal baseball, knocking in the game-winning RBI single in the eighth inning to lead the Golden Bears to a 5-4 win over Chicago State Saturday night at Evans Diamond.

With the win, Cal improves to 11-3 overall and has now won 10 of its last 11 games. Celsi had a huge game Friday night in the 21-3 win against the Cougars, hitting a grand slam, a three-run home and had another RBI to tie a school record with eight RBI in a single game.

On Saturday, Celsi was 3-for-3 with a double in the third inning and then knocked in Max Dutto with the game-winning hit in the eighth inning.

The winning pitcher for the Bears was freshman reliever Erik Martinez, who replace starter Ryan Mason in the sixth and pitched 3.0 innings with only one hit, no runs, no walks and two strikeouts. Senior closer Dylan Nelson earned his second save of the year, throwing the top of the ninth with no hits, no walks and two strikeouts.

Cal will play the third game of the three-game series versus Chicago State, Sunday, March 8 at 11 a.m. at Evans Diamond.
