Cal Falls One Point Short In Pac-12 Title Game, 61-60
SEATTLE - California came inches away from earning the first Pac-12 Tournament championship in program history, but No. 19 Stanford was able to hold off the Golden Bear comeback and claim a 61-60 win at Key Arena.
It was California third trip to the finals with Stanford knocking off the Bears in each instance. The Golden Bears were attempting to become the first No. 4 seed to win the Pac-12 Tournament.
Courtney Range led California with 17 points and 9 rebounds off the bench while MIkayla Cowling and Mercedes Jefflo added 14 and 16, respectively.
All-American candidate Brittany Boyd missed 13 minutes in the first half after taking an elbow to the right side of her face, sending the point guard to the training room from the 16:01 mark until just 2:22 remained in the half. She finished with seven points, three assists and two rebounds.
"That was a really good game. I thought Stanford was a little bit better than us in some critical moments and made some plays," California coach Lindsay Gottlieb said. "But we took a punch literally and figuratively -- our leader and point guard goes out with blood gushing -- and everybody else rallies and that was something I'm proud of."
Boyd and Reshanda Gray were named to the Pac-12 All-Tournament Team.
California next awaits the NCAA Selection Show that will be held Monday, March 16 at 4 p.m. (PT).
