Cal Falls 12-6 to Stanford
BERKELEY - Plagued by fielding errors and a six-run sixth inning, Cal baseball fell to Bay Area rival Stanford, 12-6, in the final game of a three-game series Sunday at Evans Diamond. Down, 11-0, the Golden Bears did provide some spark by scoring six runs in the eighth inning, highlighted by junior right fielder Brian Celsi's grand slam.
With the loss, David Esquer's squad dropped to 22-11 overall and 9-6 in Pac-12 play. Stanford won two games in the series, capturing game one, 4-2, on Friday. The Bears came back to win game two, 11-10, on Celsi's game-winning RBI in the bottom of the ninth.
The Cardinal were paced by Zach Hoffpauir, who was 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI. Celsi, sophomore center fielder Aaron Knapp and freshman catcher Brett Cumberland had two hits apiece for the Bears. Junior second baseman Max Dutto had a double and Knapp had an RBI single in Cal's eighth inning as well.
