LOS ANGELES – Cal yielded two infield single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning that led to two UCLA runs as the No. 3-ranked Bruins defeated the No. 16-ranked Golden Bears, 2-1, Saturday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium. UCLA ended up capturing the series two games to one. Cal won the opener, 2-0, but fell 7-1 on Friday to go to 23-13 overall and 10-8 in Pac-12 play. UCLA improved to 28-8 and 14-4 in league.
The Bears scored their run in the top of the sixth inning when senior first baseman Chris Paul had a triple to right center field and scored on a single through the right side of the infield by sophomore third baseman Lucas Erceg.
Cal, which received outstanding pitching from freshman left-handed starter Matt Ladrech (6.2 innings, four hits, no runs, one walk, three strikeouts), gave up seven hits on the evening with only two of the hits reaching the outfield. With two outs in the bottom of the eighth, UCLA stayed alive with an infield single to second base. Then after a walk, Ty Moore tied the game with a single up the middle and Chris Keck had the game winner with an infield single that went off the glove of first baseman Paul.
Still, the Bears battled in the top of ninth inning when Erceg had a one-out single and Devin Pearson single through the right side with two outs against UCLA closer Chris Berg. But, Berg was able to get Nick Halamandaris to ground out to first to end the contest.
Cal will next travel to Bay Area rival Stanford on Tuesday, April 21 at 7 p.m. for a game at Sunken Diamond shown on the Pac-12 Networks. Following the Bears' midweek game at Stanford, they continue Pac-12 play with a three-game series at Arizona, April 24-26 in Tucson.
