BERKELEY – For the second consecutive day, California shut out a team of Bulldogs, 4-0, at the Hellman Tennis Complex, but this time, the win punched the Golden Bears' tickets to Waco, Texas, where they will play in their ninth straight NCAA Championship round of 16. The third-ranked and third-seeded Bears beat 33rd-ranked Mississippi State in the round of 32 Saturday, with Klara Fabikova clinching the win with a straight-set victory on court two.

Cal next plays Stanford on May 15 at Baylor in the NCAA round of 16.

“Mississippi State is a good team,” Cal head coach Amanda Augustus said. “It was a good test for us. We definitely had to come out with our (best) game.

“We're very pleased to be in the sweet 16.”

Fabikova, ranked 18th in singles, defeated Mississippi State's 107th-ranked Georgiana Patrasc, 6-3, 6-2, on Bud Chandler court to eliminate the Bulldogs from the NCAA Championship. The Cal junior also clinched the doubles point for Cal on court two, as the fifth-ranked pair of Fabikova and senior Zsofi Susanyi beat Jasmine Lee and Naomi Tran, 8-2,

“I think I played a lot better than yesterday in singles and doubles,” Fabikova said. “And I think my energy was a lot better today than yesterday. I'm very happy I was able to clinch and send us to Waco.”

Fabikova referred to Cal's 4-0 win over the Bryant Bulldogs in Friday's NCAA round of 64 at Hellman. Both her matches against Bryant were abandoned when Cal clinched elsewhere in doubles and singles.

Against Mississippi State, the Bears were dominant in doubles, as their seventh-ranked duo of sophomores Denise Starr and Maegan Manasse beat MSU's 51st-ranked team of Georgiana Patrasc and Martina Frantova, 8-1, on court one (Newmark Stadium), before Susanyi and Fabikova clinched. On court three, the pair of junior Lynn Chi and Karla Popovic was also leading, 6-3, over Louis Ronaldson and Timea Guibe when the court-two result ended doubles.

In singles, Cal quickly moved ahead 2-0 after the Bulldogs' Frantova – who lost the first set 6-0 to the 44th-ranked Starr – retired due to injury on court three (Mascarin Court). Playing in her last match as a Bear in Berkeley, the 43rd-ranked Susanyi followed with a decisive 6-1, 6-1 win over Ronaldson on court four (Savides Sullivan Court) to give Cal a 3-0 lead, before Fabikova handed the Bears the victory.

The Bears takes on a familiar opponent in fourth-seeded and 14th-ranked Stanford (17-5) in the May 15 round of 16 at 1 p.m. ET at the Hurd Tennis Center in Waco. During the 2014-15 regular season, Cal beat its rival, 4-3, in a nonconference match on March 1 on the Farm and then closed the regular season with a 5-2 Pac-12 victory over the Cardinal at Hellman.
