BERKELEY -- California women's soccer junior Emma Fletcher will join Canada's National Team for the Pan Am Games beginning on July 10 in Toronto, Canada, the Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) and Canada Soccer announced.
“Representing my country and my school is always a huge opportunity, one that I will never take for granted,” Fletcher said. “I am super excited to be playing with some of my Canadian teammates again and am looking forward to putting in some good performances against some of the top women's soccer teams in the world.”
Fletcher and her Canadian squad open the competition in Group B with a match against Ecuador on July 11 at 3 p.m. PT. Four days later on July 15, Canada will face off against Costa Rica at 2:30 p.m. PT. The squad wraps up group play on July 19 against Brazil at 2:30 p.m. PT. All matches will be held at the CIBC Hamilton Soccer Stadium.
"We are really excited for Emma. She joined us this spring and did a wonderful job integrating herself into the team," said Cal head coach Neil McGuire. "She is a very talented player who will do very well with Canada."
Canada is set to defend its title from 2011, when the national team claimed gold in Guadalajara.
The Pan Ams are a multi-sport event featuring teams from North, South and Central America and the Caribbean that are organized by the Pan American Sports Organization (PASO) and played every four years in the year preceding the Olympics (2015, 2019, etc.).
Last summer, Fletcher led Canada to an appearance in the quarterfinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup. The Victoria, British Columbia native played in all four games, totaling 283 minutes throughout the tournament.
Fletcher joined the Bears in January after two successful seasons at Louisiana State University where she set an LSU freshman record with 12 assists in 2013. As a sophomore in 2014, Fletcher registered one goal and two assists, including the gamewinner in the Tigers' victory at BYU.
