BERKELEY – Two-time All-American Tarah Murrey, who helped Cal reach the NCAA title match in 2010, has been hired as the program's new volunteer assistant coach, head coach Rich Feller announced Tuesday.

Murrey was part of some of the best teams in Cal history. In addition to reaching the NCAA Final Four in 2010, Murrey and the Bears advanced to the NCAA Regional Finals in 2008 and 2009.

Since leaving Cal in 2012, Murrey has played professionally in Italy and Puerto Rico and coached an assortment of club programs across the country.

"It's an honor to be part of the team again,” Murrey said. “I'm just really excited to learn from the whole coaching staff and get more experience as a coach. To be able to give back to my alma mater is a great opportunity.”

Murrey replaces Carson Lowden, who will serve as a full-time assistant coach for the 2015 season while Jennifer Dorr is on maternity leave.

“I'm excited to have Tarah Murrey come back to Cal and be one of our assistant coaches,” Feller said. “She was part of our very best teams. Because of that, she has a familiarity of what kind of sacrifice it took and what kind of behaviors it took off the court to get to that level.”

Murrey was named an AVCA First Team All-American in 2010 and earned Second Team honors in 2011. She was the 2011 Pac-12 Volleyball Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a top-10 finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award.

Murrey finished her Cal career with 1,714 kills, good for fifth on the school's all-time list.

“I've literally been in their shoes,” Murrey said. “I've been in that jersey. I've been on that court. I experienced what it's like to be a Cal volleyball player and the highs and lows of being a college athlete. I struggled through a season and then known what it's like to put in the hard work to get to the top level of your college career. I think that's something I can bring to the girls as their coach.”

The Bears open training camp Aug. 10 and the 2015 season begins Aug. 28-29 with the Molten Classic at Haas Pavilion.

“She will be a great role model,” Feller said. “She knows our techniques and styles. She can bring a lot of different things to the game.”
