Davidson, New Zealand Set for International Competition
BERKELEY – California sophomore Penina Davidson is one of 12 women among the final Tall Ferns roster who will represent New Zealand in several upcoming international competitions, including a bid for the 2016 Rio Olympic Games, Basketball New Zealand announced Saturday.
New Zealand head coach Kennedy Kereama trimmed the original roster from 25 to 14 ahead of a six-day training camp in South Auckland, New Zealand. Davidson is among the 12 women selected for the final squad, and one of four NCAA Division I women's basketball players on the national team roster.
The Tall Ferns begin their international program at the William Jones Cup in Taiwan from July 27-31 and will play Chinese Taipei B (July 27), Japan (July 28), South Korea (July 29), Chinese Taipei A (July 30) and the USA Select squad (July 31).
Following competition in Taiwan, the Kiwis return to New Zealand for three games against Japan, first at Cowles Stadium in Christchurch, New Zealand on Aug. 5 and 7 and then at EA Stadium in Ashburton, New Zealand on Aug. 9.
Davidson will wrap up her summer schedule with two games against Australia in the FIBA Oceania Championship Series, first on Aug. 15 in Melbourne, Australia and then on Aug. 17 in Tauranga, New Zealand. The winner of the series will automatically qualify for a berth at Rio 2016.
Davidson also represented the Tall Ferns in the 2013 FIBA Oceania Championships, where she scored five points and added eight rebounds for New Zealand in the series.
