Morgan, USA are World Cup Champions!

VANCOUVER, Canada – Golden Bear Alex Morgan and the U.S. Women's National Team soared to a 5-2 victory in their FIFA Women's World Cup Final rematch from 2011 with Japan, becoming the first U.S. squad since 1999 to win the World Cup.  The victory marks the third World Cup title for the U.S., and the first for Morgan, who also played with the 2011 squad.

Morgan played nearly every minute of the final, notching one shot on goal in three shots before subbing out in the 86th minute for Christie Rampone. She finished her second World Cup with one goal through the tournament and five starts, making appearances in all seven matches.

The USA broke the game open in the first two minutes with two setpiece goals from Carli Lloyd in the third and fifth minutes. Lauren Holiday would add America's third goal in the 14th minute on a volley off a Japan header before Lloyd notched a hat trick with her third shot 16 minutes in.

Japan got a goal back in the 27th minute thanks a shot into the left corner by Yuki Ogimi, but the U.S. held its 4-1 lead through to halftime. Morgan tallied two shots in the first half.

In the second half, Japan cut the U.S. lead in half on an American own goal after Julie Johnston attempted to clear a ball out of the box in the 52nd minute.

Tobin Heath once again extended the U.S. lead to three goals just two minutes later, and the score settled at 5-2 through the remainder of the match.

This is Morgan's second major international victory with the USWNT, adding to a 2012 Olympic title.
