BERKELEY – Junior Jenelle Jordan moved from middle blocker to the opposite hitter position this season, but continued to take reps in the middle in case she was needed.

That paid dividends Friday night in the Cal volleyball team's season-opener against Nevada in the Molten Classic at Haas Pavilion.

With senior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise out with an injury, Jordan was needed to return to the middle against the Wolf Pack. She teamed up with fellow middle blocker Lara Vukasovic to dominate the match in a 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 victory.

Jordan had nine kills at a whopping .727 hitting percentage while also adding three blocks. Vukasovic led the Bears with 11 kills, five blocks and four service aces.

“She was doing double-duty during training camp,” Cal coach Rich Feller said. “She didn't miss any reps playing middle. She just got additional reps playing opposite. It was a good thing that we did that.”

Senior outside hitter Nikki Gombar also had nine kills and seven digs while freshman setter Mackenzie Albrecht had 11 digs and 12 assists. The Bears hit for a .282 percentage as a team while holding Nevada to a .117 clip.

Freshman Belen Castillo had six kills and a .308 hitting percentage in her college debut.

The Bears played without six players because of injuries.

“The depth on the team is good,” Feller said. “Even with the injuries, we played some solid volleyball today. The team stayed solid and steady throughout the match. We really just did some good things. We have some depth going on. I'm excited.”

The Bears continue play in the Molten Classic with matches against Eastern Washington (10 a.m.) and Seattle (7 p.m.).
