Bears Fall To No. 24 Pacific
BERKELEY – The Cal volleyball team engaged in an epic second set against No. 24 Pacific on Saturday night, but ultimately was edged and went on to a 25-18, 36-34, 25-19 loss at Haas Pavilion.
The Bears (6-5) held a 24-21 lead in the second set but the Tigers scored three in a row to tie it up. Cal had four more set points and Pacific had five before the Tigers finally closed it out.
Freshman outside hitter Carmen Annevelink led the Bears with 11 kills while senior middle blocker Lillian Schonewise added 10. Cal libero Maddy Kerr had 16 digs.
The Bears jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before the Tigers came back to tie it up at 11-11. UOP then scored seven of the next eight points to take control.
Cal led for most of the second set, ultimately establishing a 15-9 lead. The Tigers came back to tie it up but never took a lead until it was 27-26. The Bears were as close as 10-9 in the third set before UOP pulled away.
Junior middle blocker Jenelle Jordan added nine kills and two blocks. Junior setter Alyssa Jensen had 37 assists and 15 digs.
The Bears return to the court Tuesday in their Pac-12 opener against No. 8 Stanford at Haas Pavilion.
