DAVIS, Calif. - A long day at the pool proved fruitful for the Cal men's water polo team as the Bears claimed an early-morning win over San Jose State and returned to Schaal Aquatics Center in the evening to beat Santa Clara, earning two victories on the first day of the Aggie Roundup hosted by UC Davis.

Cal (9-2) returns to the pool at 8 a.m. on Sunday when it takes on Concordia. Tournament play wraps up at 5:20 p.m. when the Bears take on Fresno Pacific.

Contributions came from every player on the roster as the Bears cruised to a win over the Spartans on an alread-warm morning in Davis.

Cal took just over a minute to get on the scoreboard and the first goal came from the right arm of Pedro Stellet, who took a pass from Johnny Hooper right in front of goal and fired past San Jose State goalkeeper Matej Matijevic. A steal and score by Luca Cupido provided Cal's second goal and, after a line change by the Bears and a goal by SJSU, Chandler Jarrels took a pass from Colin Mulcahy and slotted it home to make it 3-1. J.D. Ratchford finished the first period with a stylish goal of his own, grabbing a Mulcahy pass with one hand, turning and firing to beat Matijevic for a 4-1 advantage.

The Bears pushed their advantage to 9-2 by the time they switched sides, with penalty shot conversions by Nicholas Carniglia and Hooper highlighting the period. Hooper added another goal on a backhanded shovel, Cupido scored again and freshman Timothy Simenc converted on an impressive shot that found space just under the arm of a defender and to the right of Matijevic.

Cal made more lineup changes in the third period, with Peter O'Laughlin moving into goal and the Bears rotating field players frequently. Andrew Schnugg, Farrel South and Johnny Hooper each found the net and Simenc finished the period with two more goals to make it 13-4. Goals by Odysseas Masmanidis, Stellet and Matt Sherburne in the fourth wrapped up the scoring.

Simenc and Hooper led the Bears on the scoresheet with three goals apiece. Cupido had a strong game with two goals and two assists while Connor Reid also dished out three assists. Andric stopped five shots in the first half and O'Laughlin made three saves in the second half.

Not even a big gap in between matches could deter the Bears from getting out to a fast start as seven goals in the first period put the match away early at Schaal Aquatics Center.

Hooper was the catalyst for Cal right away, scoring three goals in the first period alone to help build a lead. Jarrels, Cupido, Mulcahy and Ratchford also scored to make it 7-1 Bears after one. Cupido scored twice more in the second while Mulcahy and Masmanidis added goals of their own to make it 11-2 at halftime.

Hooper and Cupido each scored three goals and Cupido added two assists in the win. Jarrels, Mulcahy and Masmanidis each scored twice and Carniglia, Stellet and Ratchford each finished with one goal. Andric stopped six shots in the first half and O'Laughlin added three saves in the second.
