Bears Win Pair, Finish Triton Invitational Unbeaten
SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The final day of competition at the Triton Invitational pitted the No. 3-ranked Cal men's water polo team against two ranked opponents but the Bears wouldn't let good competition stand in their way as they picked up wins over No. 7 UC Santa Barbara and No. 10 UC San Diego to complete a four-win weekend at Canyonview Aquatic Center.
With Sunday's victories, Cal improves to 4-0 on the season. The Bears return to action on Sunday, Sept. 13 when they travel to UC Davis for a noon match,

Holding just a slim one-goal lead after one period, the Bears pulled away in the second thanks to an offensive outburst from senior Colin Mulcahy, took a 6-2 lead into halftime and continued to add on in the second half to beat the Gauchos.
Cal's freshmen continued their impressive start to the season right away Sunday as Odysseas Masmanidis and Johnny Hooper each slotted home goals to give the Bears a 2-1 lead after one period. That youth gave way to experience in the second as Mulcahy shouldered the offensive load, scoring three goals of his own to help the Bears build a four-goal halftime advantage.
With the lead secured, Lazar Andric took over for the Bears. The junior goalkeeper from Montenegro stopped 14 shots on the match, preserving Cal's scoreboard advantage to the end. Mulcahy and Hooper shared team-high honors with three goals apiece while Masmanidis and Nicholas Carniglia added two. J.D. Ratchford and Thomas Carroll rounded out Cal's scoring.

A fast start helped the Bears pull away early and helped them close out their stay in San Diego on a definite high note as Cal rolled to a victory over the host Tritons.
The same 6-2 advantage that Cal took into halftime in the first match of the day came a little quicker in the finale as the Bears built their four-goal lead after just one period against UCSD. This time it was Carniglia who got the goal party started, finding the net off an assist from Carroll. After Jack Ellinthorpe tied it for UCSD, Cal ran off four goals in a row with Masmanidis, Carroll and two more from Mulcahy building Cal's lead.
Andric and Peter O'Laughlin shared goalkeeping duties and each had a solid game, combining for 13 saves. Mulcahy led the Bears with five goals and finished the tournament with 16. Carniglia added three goals while Masmanidis, Carroll and Farrel South each had two. Ratchford and Vassilis Tzavaras also scored for the Bears, who next host their annual alumni game on Saturday at Spieker Aquatics Complex. Cal travels to UC Davis next Sunday for a noon match.
