California vs. Utah Postgame Quotes

Head Coach Lindsey Gottlieb

On the team's second-half performance:
“Each team is a little different, and it feels weird to say but I think our coaching staff is sadder than our players because we didn't get the most out of them (the players in the second half). My message to the girls is that we lost this game with 9:13 left to go in the 3rd quarter when we fouled them on three straight possessions, or 2 minutes later when we didn't have an urgency to know what defense we're in. These are young mistakes, and urgency mistakes, and we have to learn the lesson very quickly that every possession matters whether we are winning or losing. It's hard sometimes to play with a big lead and we (the coaching staff) didn't prepare the team well enough to understand that they (Utah) were coming back. Credit to Utah, we only know how to handle our position in the game and they made it tough on us. We're a young group and we are completely focused on trying to be better and trying to win every game because every opportunity to play in this conference will not be easy.”
On young players:
“There's no better teacher than experience. We hope somewhere down the road that the bad times and hard times lead to something better. I don't know many people who have been successful when things are easy. You hurt for your young players because you don't want these losses on their resumes, but if you can change the narrative and end with a different story I doubt that at some point we won't say that we are where we are now because we started 1-3 in conference. Each season has you fighting for so much, and I want to change the story and have this season end up being the season we wanted it to be.”

Freshman Forward/Center Kristine Anigwe

On Emily Potter:
Every mistake that I made, she made me pay for it. Every time I reached over, it was a foul. Every time I didn't pump fake, she blocked my shot. I didn't expect her to be as good as she was, and I hadn't played someone like her before. She posted up, had strong steals and was a really good player.”

Sophomore Guard Gabby Green

On the issues with urgency:
“We came out flat in the second half. We didn't come out with that sense of urgency you saw us have in the first half. We are a young team and we need to learn from that mistake and not let it happen again. We've come out flat before and kind of picked it up towards the beginning of the fourth quarter but overall we have to be better.”
