CORVALLIS, Ore. – Reigning Pac-12 champion and No. 12 Oregon State proved to be too much for the Golden Bears in their first meeting of the season, and Cal fell to the Beavers, 70-48, Friday night at Gill Coliseum in Corvallis, Ore.
Heading into the matchup with the Pac-12's second-highest field goal percentage (47.6 percent), Cal was limited to just 33.9 percent (20-59) by the Oregon State defense while the Beavers shot 55.8 percent (29-52).
Junior Courtney Range led Cal with a near double-double on 17 points (7-18), including three triples, and nine rebounds. Freshman Kristine Anigwe (7-12) was second with 16 points and six rebounds, ending her four-game double-double streak. Although Anigwe's Pac-12 double-double streak came to an end, the rookie extended her double-figure scoring streak. Anigwe has put up double-digit numbers in every game this season.
Sophomore Mikayla Cowling added 10 points (4-10), and fellow sophomore Penina Davidson had five rebounds and four assists.
Against the Pac-12 favorite, the Bears opened strong, shooting 6-10 to keep pace with the Beavers, who made eight of their first 10 shots. Cal took the lead, 12-11, at 5:16 of the first quarter, but Oregon State answered with seven unanswered points until the Bears could score their next basket at 3:13.
After the last timeout of the first half at 3:15, the Bears closed out the second quarter 1-5 while the Beavers hit 4-5, including a three-pointer, to jump ahead 35-26.
At halftime, three Bears neared the double-figure mark, led by eight apiece from Cowling and Anigwe, and seven from Range.
Anigwe was the only Bear to score in the first five minutes of the third quarter, throwing up a layup from Cowling at 8:56. Meanwhile, Oregon State started an 11-0 run to lead 47-28 before a timeout at 4:25. Cal scored seven of its nine third-quarter points in the last four minutes, highlighted by a three-pointer from Range. The Beavers chipped in 19 to their total to lead 54-35 before the fourth quarter.
