No. 20 Bruins Capitalize on Cal Miscues
LOS ANGELES – California women's basketball couldn't recreate the magic of its December double overtime victory over UCLA, and the No. 20 Bruins (13-5, 5-2 Pac-12) made the Golden Bears (10-8, 1-6 Pac-12) pay for nearly every mishap, scoring 23 points off turnovers and 28 second-chance points to defeat Cal 75-56 Friday evening in Pauley Pavilion.
With no love lost after December's double overtime tangle, the game started as a back-and-forth battle at tip-off. The game locked up at 8-8 at the first timeout before the Bruins scored seven unanswered. Sophomore Mikayla Cowling chopped UCLA's lead by nearly half with a three-pointer at 1:54, and UCLA endured a three-minute scoring drought interrupted only by a pair of free throws by Kacy Swain. Junior KC Waters kept it within three points after grabbing an offensive board and drawing the and-1. A layup by UCLA's Nirra Fields with five seconds to give the Bruins a 19-14 advantage to wrap up the first quarter.
Though UCLA led by as much as eight points to open the second quarter, Cal chipped away at the Bruin lead to put the game back within three points on a pair of free throws from freshman Asha Thomas and a trey by junior Courtney Range to make it 27-24 with four minutes to the end of the half. Cal's momentum soured with three turnovers and 2-9 field goal clip while the Bruins strung together an 8-0 run to lead 35-24 at halftime.
The Bruins outrebounded Cal 30-19 in the first half, with fourteen of UCLA's 35 points coming off of second-chance points on 16 offensive boards.
UCLA, who shot 33.3 percent in the first half, was much sharper from the floor in the third quarter, going 9-16 (56.3 percent), including a 6-7 mark over a four-minute span. Cal went 2-8 in that same span, adding to the Bears' woes. A 6-17 quarter for Cal left the Bruins leading 62-41 with 10 minutes to play.
Cal added seven points to its total in the first three minutes of the fourth quarter before finding itself in another scoring drought, this time for nearly four minutes from 7:29 to 3:35. Sophomore Penina Davidson made the most of her minutes in her second career start, scoring eight points with all of Cal's final four layups starting at the 3:35 mark.
