No. 7 Bears Keep It Rolling On Senior Day
BERKELEY – Cal senior Kelly Naze may not have succeeded in her quest to not cry on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon.
But her success in the pool was plentiful.
Naze won the 1,000 freestyle in just her second race ever in the event and also took the 400 individual medley as the No. 7 Cal women's swimming & diving closed out its home season with a 181-98 victory over Arizona State at Spieker Aquatics Complex.
Naze and Cal's other six seniors were honored with their families during a pre-meet ceremony. Moments later, Naze was in the pool swimming the 1,000, which she completed in a time of 9:59.09.
“I tried not to cry, but I think it just hit me,” Naze said. “Just seeing my parents and seeing how special it is that I was here and made it four years and had such a great time, it was really, really moving.”
Fellow senior Rachael Acker won the 200 free in 1:47.95, and she and Naze, Elizabeth Pelton, Rachel Bootsma and Alicia Grima teamed up to swim the meet-ending 400 free relay as an all-senior exhibition team, with Grima and Naze splitting the anchor leg.
“It's emotional,” Cal coach Teri McKeever said. “It's sad and exciting all at the same time. I think it's just a way for all of us to honor and let them know how much they bring to the program, not just in their performance but the behind-the-scenes, day-to-day stuff. It puts things in perspective. It's pretty special.”
Senior Anne Kastler won the 3-meter diving event with a score of 331.50 while senior Sara-Lina Boushakra was second on the 1-meter board with a mark of 272.03.
Other multiple winners included junior Celina Li, who took the 200 butterfly in a time of 2:00.92 and the 200 breaststroke in 2:17.79; freshman Amy Bilquist, who won the 100 backstroke in 53.24 and the 200 back in 1:55.44; and junior Farida Osman, who captured the 50 free with a time of 22.83 and the 100 free in 49.97.
“We wanted to come in and swim well again today and get back into the collegiate season,” McKeever said. “It's important for us to get in and see what we can do on a second day and make sure we can repeat some of the good stuff that happened yesterday.”
The Bears, now 5-0 in dual meets (4-0 Pac-12), now have three more dual meets before the postseason. Cal visits No. 5 USC on Friday and No. 18 UCLA on Saturday before closing the regular season out at No. 2 Stanford on Feb. 13.
“I would say our team finally found its identity,” Naze said. “I was really excited to see that our team was able to race fast, out-touch the other opponents but also have a lot of fun doing it, and find our style of how it works.”
