Arizona Snaps No. 21 Cal?s Streak
Tucson, Ariz. – A back-and-forth battle in Tucson ended in No. 21 California's first loss to Arizona in 10 seasons as the Wildcats snapped the Golden Bears' 17-game series streak with a 57-52 victory. This is Arizona's first triumph in 18 meetings as Cal falls to 0-2 in Pac-12 play and 9-4 this season.
After leading by five points at halftime, the Bears took a one-point lead into the fourth quarter before the Wildcats edged the Bears with a 7-2 run in the final three minutes.
Freshman Kristine Anigwe totaled 19 points and 10 rebounds for her seventh double-double of the season. She also logged a career-high four blocks. Junior Courtney Range poured in 18 points and five boards.
The Bears couldn't stave off the Wildcats for most of the first half, and the teams traded basket after basket but kept it close.
Anigwe was the only Bear to score from the floor for most of the first quarter before Range hit a jumper with 21 seconds to go to give Cal an 11-9 lead, but not for long. With four seconds to go, Arizona's Michal Miller sunk a three-pointer and once again the Wildcats pulled ahead, 12-11.
Cal edged the Wildcats in the second quarter as the Bears began to gain steam, shooting 7-13 with three consecutive buckets to end the quarter, including a three-pointer from sophomore Penina Davidson. Arizona tried to keep up but missed back-to-back jumpers on their last two possessions, and the Bears took a 27-22 lead into the locker room, shooting 50 percent (11-22) while limiting Arizona to 21.2 percent (7-33).
A three-pointer by freshman Asha Thomas opened the second half to stretch Cal's lead to eight points, but the Wildcats weren't ready to give up and Taryn Griffey answered with her own trey less than a minute later. Cal held on as Arizona scored four unanswered points, then continued on a 13-7 run to put the game back within reach. The Bears led by just one point heading into the final quarter, 39-38.
The Bears again stretched their lead to five points and then gave it away, with Arizona finally tying the game up at 7:06, 43-43. The teams soldiered on with more back-and-forth action. Even as Arizona pushed its one-point lead to three points with a Griffey jumper, Range matched the score with her fourth three-pointer of the night.
The tie didn't last long. Arizona took the lead for good with a layup by Dezja James and ended the game with a 7-2 run over the final three minutes.
