No. 10 Bears Shut Out Ducks In Eugene

EUGENE, ORE. --- No. 10 California women's soccer remained unbeaten in Pac-12 Conference play with its 2-0 victory over the University of Oregon on Saturday evening at Pape' Field.

Playing through less than ideal weather conditions may have slowed down the Golden Bears' typical rate of shot creation (just over 17 shots per game) but Cal was still able to control tempo with strong possession and steady all-around play. The end result was the Bears improving to 5-0-1 in Pac-12 action while sending the Ducks to their seventh straight defeat.

For Cal (12-2-1 overall), the senior forward duo of senior Arielle Ship and redshirt senior Ifeoma Onumonu were able to take advantage of excellent chances in each half to beat Oregon (6-8-1, 0-6-0 Pac-12). Ship put home the eventual game-winning goal in the 20th minute, stepping up to nail the shot after Onumonu drew the penalty on a wide-open push on goal. In the 61st minute, Onumonu successfully helped the cause after finding open space in front of goal and putting away an assist from freshman forward Abigail Kim.

Both scores were the eighth of the season for Ship and Onumonu, while the helper was Kim's second of the campaign. With 31 career goals, Onumonu moved into a tied for fifth all-time at Cal with Erika Hinton (1990-93) while Ship's 26th moved her past Winnie Burns (1985-88) and Andrea Rodebaugh (1984-87) to sit in seventh place behind Onumonu and Hinton.

Junior goalkeeper Emily Boyd, whose 19-save weekend against UCLA & USC earned her five conference and national awards, did not have as busy an outing as her last two. Boyd only needed a pair of saves to secure her 10th shutout of the year.

Cal and Oregon entered halftime tied in shots (3) and shots on goal (2) after playing 45 minutes of rain-soaked soccer but the Bears dominated play in the second half when the skies cleared up (8-1 in shots, 4-0 SOG).
