Goal Slips in During OT Loss to No. 25 SDSU

BERKELEYCalifornia's potential first-conference win slipped by. Literally.

In the third minute of overtime, after battling through a torrential downpour, a shot by San Diego State's Michael Sauers spun along the field toward the goal and looked as if it would be stopped by the Golden Bears (4-6-2, 0-4-1 Pac-12) before it reached freshman goalie Drake Callender.

Unfortunately, what looked to be an easy kick slipped by a Cal defender and Callender, whose reaction time was impeded by a flooded field, to give the No. 25 Aztecs (7-3-3, 2-2-1) a 1-0 win.  Prior to that, Callender was perfect on the day finishing with six saves against seven shots on goal.

"It was a really exciting game and we had some great chances during the second half," head coach Kevin Grimes said. "You have to just look at the next match and next opportunity ahead of you. You also have to continue to play well. That's the best thing you can ask of yourself.

"Today was a good performance and we want to continue that throughout the rest of the season."

Cal now trails 10-11-3 in their matchup with SDSU under Grimes, but still lead play in Berkeley 8-3-2. The pair face off again next Sunday.

The Bears head to Los Angeles for the first of their final two road games of regulation play to face the No. 17 UCLA Bruins on Thursday before visiting San Diego.
