Watson Earns Spot On Hornung Award Honor Roll
Junior Running Back Picks Up Career And Team Season-High 261 All-Purpose Yards In Oregon Win
BERKELEY – Tre Watson was one of five FBS college football student-athletes selected Monday to the Paul Hornung Award Honor Roll after racking up a career and team season-high 261 all-purpose yards on 36 touches in Cal's 52-49 double overtime victory over Oregon last Friday at Kabam Field at California Memorial Stadium.
Watson rushed 28 times for 154 yards to establish career highs in both categories while he also had 50 yards receiving on a career-high five receptions and the first two-touchdown catch game of his career on a pair of 14-yard scoring passes from
Davis Webb. In addition, he contributed three kick returns for 57 yards.
"Tre is a versatile player who can impact a football game in many different ways," head coach
Sonny Dykes said. "He continues to get better every week and had an outstanding all-around performance against Oregon. We will certainly need his continued production throughout the remainder of the season."
"It's truly a blessing to be honored for an award like this," Watson said. "But I couldn't have done it without my amazing offensive line, quarterback, receivers and fellow running backs so I want to give thanks to them."
Watson and his backfield teammate
Khalfani Muhammad have played key roles over the last two games for a Cal rushing attack that has ran for over 300 yards in each of its last two contests at Oregon State (317) and against Oregon (311). The back-to-back 300-yard rushing games are the first for Cal since the 2004 team ran for 300 yards in each of the final three regular-season contests. Both Watson and Muhammad ran for over 100 yards in each contest to also make them the first two Cal players to post back-to-back 100-yard games together since J.J. Arrington and Marshawn Lynch in the ninth and 10th games of 2004 at Washington and vs. Stanford. Watson rushed for 134 yards at Oregon State before picking up his career-high 154 against the Ducks, while Muhammad followed his career-high 165-yard rushing effort at Oregon State with 148 against Oregon.
Watson has 755 all-purpose yards on the season with 451 rushing yards on 79 carries with two touchdowns, 164 receiving yards on 13 catches with three scores and 140 yards on eight kickoff returns. Muhammad leads the team with 963 all-purpose yards in 2016 including team highs of 525 yards rushing on 78 carries and 408 yards on 15 kickoff returns. He also has six catches for 30 yards.
