Cal Falls To No. 7 Washington In Three Sets

BERKELEY – Junior Christine Alftin had 11 kills and senior setter Alyssa Jensen recorded 35 assists and 14 digs but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 7 Washington on Friday, 25-18, 25-23, 25-19 at Haas Pavilion.

Senior Jenelle Jordan added eight kills and two blocks and freshman Maddie Haynes had seven kills for the Bears (8-13, 2-9 Pac-12).

After the Huskies won the first set convincingly, Cal erased a sizable deficit in the second and pushed Washington to the limit. The Huskies led 11-6 before the Bears scored seven of the next eight points to go in front, 13-12. Washington eventually went back in front 20-17, but Cal once again strung together a run, scoring four in a row to go in front 21-20 on a block by Christine Alftin and Belen Castillo. The set was ultimately tied 23-23 before the Huskies notched back-to-back points to take command of the match.

The Bears fell behind early in the third set but came back to keep it close, trimming the deficit to 14-13 on a kill by Haynes and an attack error by Washington. But the Huskies then scored five points in a row to establish a comfortable advantage and were able to close out the match.

Junior Jessica Gaffney had 12 digs for the Bears while senior libero Maddy Kerr added 11.

The Bears return to action Saturday to host No. 18 Washington State at 7 p.m.
