Game Recap: Field Hockey | | Cal Athletics

Pacific Powers Past Cal, 4-0

BERKELEY – A wet and soggy morning in Berkeley paved the way for a downpour of shots, but unfortunately not in Cal field hockey's favor as the Golden Bears fell to the Pacific Tigers, 4-0, in their home finale at Underhill Field.

Cal wraps up the regular season with a 4-12 overall record and 1-5 record in America East play, earning the No. 3 seed for the upcoming conference championship tournament.

The Bears, who have missed injured starting goalkeeper Kori Griswold for five complete games, were shut out for the third game in a row on goals from four different Tigers. Danielle Mentink made her second career start in goal for the Bears, tallying three saves in her the first complete-game performance of her collegiate career.

Melina Moore and Gabi Jimenez led Cal with two shots apiece, but the Tigers outshot the Bears 13-6, including seven shots on goal, in the victory.

As is often the case in meetings between the two teams, the game was physical from the get-go, with Pacific scoring its first goal on a scrum in front of the cage. Marguerite van Wyk connected with Ash Rutherford, who was able to escape the fray and tap the ball into the goal in the 18th minute.

Minutes before halftime, Savannah Burns dribbled a ball in the circle and launched it in for a 2-0 Tiger lead at 31:52.

"The turning point was the second goal. That was preventable," said head coach Shellie Onstead. "We talked a lot about their skilled players and what they want to do, and we basically let (Savannah Burns) play to her strength, which was coming in on the back of her stick."

Cal held the edge in corners through the first half, 4-2, but the Bear offense struggled to produce more than three shots.

In the second half, Hayley Kilfoil grabbed the ball off a deflection during a penalty corner to up Pacific's lead, and van Wyk added a goal to her earlier assist with a dribble into the goal.

HEAD COACH SHELLIE ONSTEAD'S TAKE
On overall performance:
"The turning point was the second goal. That was preventable. We talked a lot about their skilled players and what they want to do, and we basically let (Savannah Burns) play to her strength, which was coming in on the back of her stick. We've given up too many goals on the back stick, and I think that was the turning point."

"We had a chance to get back in the game early in the second half, and the third goal was a little bit of inexperience. We stopped and expected a whistle. At that point, it was pretty hard to recover."

PACIFIC'S GOALS
17:45 – Ash Rutherford (assisted by Marguerite van Wyk)
31:52 – Savannah Burns (unassisted)
39:06 – Hayley Kilfoil (unassisted)
63:29 – Marguerite van Wyk (unassisted)
