MALIBU, CALIF. --- An outstanding season by the No. 24 California women's soccer team came to a close Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Tournament as the Golden Bears played the No. 19 Pepperdine Waves to a 1-1 double overtime tie but were eliminated in a penalty kick shootout, 3-2. The Bears close the 2016 campaign with a record of 13-5-3.
Cal found itself down early after Pepperdine (12-4-4) scored first in the sixth minute of the match. Rylee Baisden, the Waves' leader in goals, assists and points, put a 40 yard free kick on the mark for teammate Danielle Thomas to head past junior goalkeeper

Ifeoma Onumonu was able to make a run down the left sideline, beat her defender and put a cross at the feet of senior
Arielle Ship, who scored on a sliding touch in front of the net. The goal was her team-leading 11th of the season.
Despite several chances by both teams in the remaining 22 minutes of the half and the 20 minutes of overtime, the match - and the right to advance to the second round - would come down to PKs.
