PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. â Cal wrapped up its 2016 fall schedule with a 14-10 loss to Wake Forest in singles action in the consolation finals of the Cypress Point Invitational played Tuesday at the prestigious Cypress Point Club. Cal had split its first two matches of the event Monday with a 10.5-1.5 loss in an opening round of four ball (best ball) to host Stanford before putting together an 11-1 win over Georgia in foursomes (alternate shot).
Collin Morikawa and
William Aldred won their singles matches Tuesday with Morikawa a 4-0 winner over Clancy Waugh and Aldred taking a 3.5-0.5 decision against Will Zalatoris.
Stephen Griggs and
Walker Huddy fell 3-1 to Lee Detmer and Paul McBride, respectively.
Devin Hua lost 3.5-0.5 to Eric Bae while
Clayton Madey dropped a 4-0 decision to Cameron Young.
USC won the Cypress Point Classic with a 19.5-4.5 victory over Georgia Tech in the championship singles match also on Tuesday. The event was a bracketed match-play event hosted by Stanford that also featured Alabama, Cal, Georgia, Georgia Tech, USC, UCLA and Wake Forest. The eight teams competing were pre-seeded No. 1 through No. 8 in order by average ranking between Golfstat and Golfweek rankings seven days prior to event. Monday's opening-round of bracketed play featured matches between teams seeded No. 1/8, No. 2/7, No. 3/6 and No. 4/5. Opening-round winners advanced forward in the bracket, while losers moved to consolation bracket with each team guaranteed to play three matches.
Four total points were available per match. One point each was awarded for front-nine match and back-nine matches, while two points were awarded for the overall match. Each match was played over 18 holes under the format set for that round. The total number of "holes won" by each side over the full 18 holes settled ties. Teams with the highest point total at the end of each round advanced in the bracket.
Cal returns to action January 23-24 when the Bears open their 2017 spring schedule at the Arizona Intercollegiate at the Sewailo Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
