Bears Power Past Bakersfield

BERKELEY – The Cal women's basketball team had five different players score in double-figures as the Bears defeated CSU Bakersfield 86-63 on Sunday afternoon at Haas Pavilion. The 23-point victory was Cal's largest of the year and has the Bears off to a 4-0 start for the third consecutive season.

Sophomore Kristine Anigwe paced the Bears (4-0, 0-0 Pac-12) with 23 points and 11 rebounds – her third consecutive double-double and sixth in the last seven games - while Mikayla Cowling, Courtney Range, Mi'Cole Cayton, and Asha Thomas all reached double-figures in a balanced offensive effort.

Bakersfield (1-3, 0-0 WAC) freshman Aja Williams led all scorers with 35 points, going 9-17 from beyond the arc. Williams' 35 points are the most any opposing player has scored against Cal over the last two seasons.

The Bears were able to establish their interior presence from the get-go, outscoring the Roadrunners 14-4 in the paint in the first quarter. Cal matched its season high with 40 total points in the paint, as Anigwe put together an efficient outing, going 10-13 from the field while dishing out a season-high two assists.

The 2016 USBWA Freshman of the Year continued the stellar start to her freshman season, registering her third consecutive game with at least 20 points and 10 rebounds. It was the 14th 20-point, 10-rebound performance of Anigwe's career. No player in all of Division I women's basketball has more such games since the start of last season.

"I think she is making some extraordinary things look ordinary," said Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. "I also think we have raised the bar on what we expect from her. To me, I love the ten for thirteen. I also love the two assists to one turnover as she was facing tons of pressure and was able to figure it out. She's super talented, like all of them, but we try to get her better each day."

While Anigwe was able to assert herself in the post, the Bears continued to have success from three-point range. Freshman Mi'Cole Cayton – who  entered the game with just eight career points – was automatic from beyond the arc, going 3-3 from three-point range to finish with a career-best 13 points.

Cowling added three triples of her own and finished with 18 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. The junior from Benicia, Calif. has posted at least 15 points, five rebounds, and five assists in each of her last three games.

Range and Thomas both connected on a pair of three-pointers as Cal went 10-19 from beyond the arc, the Bears' second consecutive game with at least 10 threes. This marked just the second time in the last 15 seasons that Cal has made 10 or more threes in back-to-back games.

Cal's season-high 86 points were complimented by a stingy defensive-effort that held Bakersfield to just nine points in the third quarter. The Bears were able to capitalize on 16 turnovers by the Roadrunners, turning them into 12 points.

The Bears look to continue their unbeaten start on Friday, hosting the 38th edition of the Cal Classic. Cal will face East Bay Rival San Francisco at 1 p.m. on Friday, November 25, followed by a 3:15 p.m. tilt between Western Carolina and Duquesne. Saturday's consolation game will tip off at 1 p.m., with the Championship game at 3:15 p.m. The Bears have won the Cal Classic four of the last five seasons.
