Bears Suffer Five-Set Loss On Senior Day

BERKELEY – Junior Christine Alftin had 16 kills and a career-high 17 digs but the Cal volleyball team fell to Oregon State 25-27, 25-14, 25-19, 23-25, 15-10 on Senior Day at Haas Pavilion on Wednesday.

Senior Jenelle Jordan added 12 kills and three blocks and freshman Maddie Haynes had 11 kills for the Bears. Senior Maddy Kerr had 23 digs and senior setter Alyssa Jensen added 44 assists and 18 digs.

After a pre-match ceremony that honored Kerr, Jensen, Jordan and fellow seniors Sabrina Blackwell and Laura Leap, Cal won a hard-fought first set. The Beavers led for much of the way, but the Bears took their first lead at 17-16. Cal didn't trail again until they saw its 24-22 lead turn into a 25-24 deficit. The Bears battled back, however, getting a block from Jordan and freshman Bailee Huizenga and a couple of Beavers hitting errors to close out the set.

After falling behind quickly in the second set, the Bears made a comeback in the third set that fell short. Oregon State raced out to a 12-5 lead, but Cal cut the deficit to 16-14 after a three-point run that included kills by Alftin and junior Antzela Dempi as well as an OSU attack error. The Bears trimmed the deficit further to 19-18 but the Beavers then scored six of the final seven points of the set to take the lead in the match.

The fourth set was close throughout and was ultimately tied at 21-21 before an OSU hitting error and a kill by Dempi gave the Bears a cushion. At set point, Cal sophomore Belen Castillo came up with a solo block to force the decisive fifth set.

The Beavers took control of the final set quickly, jumping out to a 10-2 lead. Cal got within four at 13-9 before Oregon St. ended it.

Dempi gave the Bears a lift with six kills and two blocks in three sets. Blackwell recorded a season-high 14 digs. Cal had a season-high 97 digs as a team.

The Bears close out the regular season Friday at No. 12 Stanford. First serve is at 5 p.m. and the match will be televised by Pac-12 Bay Area.
