BERKELEY – Cal's offense was firing on all cylinders Saturday afternoon as the Bears beat Duquesne 86-66 in the championship game of the Cal Classic at Haas Pavilion. With the win, Cal improves to 6-0 on the season, one win away from matching the best start in program history.
Sophomore Kristine Anigwe led the Golden Bears with 19 points and 10 rebounds for her fourth double-double of the season and the 18th of her career. Senior Courtney Range added 18 points on 4-7 shooting from three-point range while junior Penina Davidson had a season-high 14 points and matched her career best with nine rebounds. Classmate Mikayla Cowling had a team-high six assists to go with 13 points.
The Bears have won the Cal Classic five of the last six times the tournament has been held.Â
Range was named the Cal Classic Tournament MVP, averaging 21.5 points per game over the two days while going 9-18 from beyond the arc. Anigwe and Davidson joined Range on the All-Tournament Team, along with San Francisco's Rachel Howard, Western Carolina's Sherae Bonner, and Duquesne's Chassidy Omogrosso.
Omogrosso led the visiting Dukes with 17Â points in Saturday's championship game, going 5-11Â from three-point range.
The Bears' inside-outside game was clicking from the get-go, as early scores by Anigwe and Davidson helped Cal open the game on a 14-3 run. Cal's stingy defense carried over from Friday's win over San Francisco, holding the visiting Dukes without a field goal for a stretch of nearly five minutes early in the first quarter. Cal led 21-9 after the first quarter, the second consecutive game the Bears held their opponent to fewer than 10 points in the opening period.
Range continued to have success from three-point range, going 4-5 from beyond the arc in the first half as the Bears took a 49-32 lead into halftime. Cal's 49 points are the most the Bears have scored in any half all season.
Duquesne, who earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament last season, connected on 13 threes, but it was not enough to overcome the Bears' dominant inside game, as Cal outscored the Dukes 44-14 in the paint. Cal committed a season-low 10 turnovers and outscored Duquesne in transition, 15-0.
"This was probably our biggest challenge thus far, and I thought our players responded emphatically," said head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. "I like how we're playing. The balance, especially on offense shows a lot. We're excited on where we are, and we're hungry to keep getting better."
The Bears will be back in action next Sunday, playing their first game outside of the state of California when they visit Nebraska on December 4 (1 p.m. PT). The Bears beat the Cornhuskers in overtime, 87-80, last season at Haas Pavilion, the first meeting ever between the teams.
Cal returns to Haas Pavilion on Thursday, December 8, hosting Sacramento State at 7 p.m.
