TUCSON, Ariz. - The Cal women's basketball team opened Pac-12 play in victorious fashion, beating Arizona 74-64, on Thursday night in Tucson to improve to 13-0 on the season. The No. 21 Bears (13-0, 1-0 Pac-12) have won 13 straight, now in sole possession of the second-longest win streak in program history, and snapped a 10-game road losing streak in conference play.Â
Senior Courtney Range led the team with 17 points while junior forward Penina Davidson added 12 points and a career-best 14Â rebounds for her first career double-double. Sophomore center Kristine Anigwe added 16Â points and 11Â rebounds, while classmate Asha Thomas chipped in 11 points.Â
Arizona (9-3, 0-1 Pac-12) came out strong to start the game, leading the Bears by as many as five in the opening period as the Wildcats went 2-3 from beyond the arc. But Cal's defense came alive mid-way through the quarter, holding the Wildcats scoreless for over four minutes as the Bears closed the first quarter on a 7-0 run.
Cal carried that momentum into the second quarter, outscoring Arizona 17-9 to take a 10-point lead into halftime. The Bears were once again able to frustrated Arizona's offensive flow, holding the Wildcats scoreless for 5:30 late in the half.Â
The hosts came out of the locker room with energy,  outscoring the Bears 22-19 in the in the third quarter.  Arizona senior LaBrittney Jones scored 15 of her game-high 24 points in the second half as the Wildcats drew within seven entering the fourth. Malena Washington made a layup to get Arizona within five with 9:17 to play, but Thomas hit a three-pointer to spark a 9-0 run, capped by back-to-back baskets by Anigwe. The Bears went 4-4 from the foul line over the final minute to secure Cal's first road win in conference play since a 74-59  win at Oregon on February 26, 2015.Â

Lindsay Gottlieb and have won 19 of their last 20 meetings with Arizona. Cal once again won the battle in the paint, outscoring the Wildcats 40-30 in the interior. Cal was also dominant on the glass, out-rebounding Arizona 45-27, sparked by Davidson's 14 boards. Anigwe, who picked up her fourth foul midway through the third quarter, chipped in 11 rebound for her third consecutive double-double.
Cal will be back in action on New Years Day, facing No. 18 Arizona State at 2 p.m. PT in a Top-25 showdown televised live on Pac-12 Networks. Cal is 1-0 against ranked opponents this season, beating No. 20 Oklahoma on Dec. 20 in Las Vegas. The Sun Devils have won seven straight and host Stanford on Friday to kick off conference play.
Cal lost to Arizona State in Tempe last year, 57-49, but knocked off the Sun Devils in the Pac-12 Tournament in March. The 10-seed Bears beat the second-seed Sun Devils 75-64 in the quarterfinals, the largest upset in Pac-12 Tournament history.
