Washington at California Postgame Quotes
Sunday, Jan. 31, 2016 | Haas Pavilion | Berkeley, Calif.
California Head Coach Lindsay Gottlieb
On Washington's performance:
“I think this felt like a Washington kind of game that we were just struggling to play in versus us being in control and we credit them because they are really good at what they do. We were unable to make it a Cal-type of game as much as we wanted to. I thought our players fought to hang in there a number of different times. This is a different kind of game -- they had five people standing in the paint. We knew that was gong to happen and they can't know what it's until they've experienced it so my hope is that we can, with the youth that we have, understand that each situation is an opportunity to grow and learn from it, and through the course of that want to be fighting and clawing to be the team that plays the hardest and that does some things now on the fly while we're learning. I don't think we quite did that today but we will be ready to go on Tuesday.”
On improving from the LA road trip:
“I definitely think we have a group that continues to stay together and stay with me. I just need to yell at them like five times a day to get them to that. I really do think that all want to be good and they all want to do well together and they want to hear hard things and get better so I think there has been a continuous commitment to that. Obviously, it's nice to be at home, and I thought we had a good week of practice -- a hard week of practice -- and I just thought that they've come out and responded. What we need to learn and understand is that it's not just us against nobody, that in addition to being a certain way all the time -- the way we handle everything, doing that at the highest level just gives you a chance to be in games -- so I think it's just us realizing this is how it should feel all the time, the commitment level and the way we need to approach some things and then there's hard things thrown at you and you have a chance to win. So I did like our demeanor and approach in both games, but we're not a program that's happy to split or something, but it was nice to be at home and battle.”
On playing Stanford Tuesday:
“I don't think I will ever be a coach at the University of California and say 'It's just another game.' We're playing Stanford. It's a big game regardless of what sport it is. In women's basketball not only are they Stanford and our Bay Area rival but also they are one of the best programs in the history of women's college basketball. So it's just not any other game. I don't want our players thinking it's just another game – every game matters -- and we're going to be ready, it's a special game.”
On her performance tonight:
“I definitely need to be more aggressive and put more points on the board for my team but the coaches were just telling me 'They're going to give you open looks and just be ready to knock them down,' and I've been working on that, building my confidence back up and just seeing the openings either I can create or my teammates can create for me.”
On the team's performance tonight:
“The biggest thing that we talked about was taking care of the ball, turnovers. We have to cut down on that. I mean we will, it's going to be a process but I feel like turnovers is what hurt us the most.”
