California Women?s Basketball Postgame Quotes
Feb. 12, 2016 | Haas Pavilion | Berkeley, Calif.
On the game:
“I am certain if our effort (from tonight) was that way throughout the conference season, our record wouldn't be where it is. It is a hard thing to hear, but it is an important lesson to learn. I also think we still need to get sharper and grow, and a team like ASU really exposes that with their sharp play and veteran players. I am proud of our team's effort, and am disappointed that we lost, but I think this will be a good learning opportunity to take things from, especially gaining positives from our effort and learning from where we were not sharp enough tonight. We will use the effort from tonight and be ready for Sunday.”
“Kristine (Anigwe) didn't suit up tonight, and that was my decision. She will be ready to go on Sunday and we are all going to be ready to play Arizona. The team responded like Cal teams do, really rallied around each other and focused on our mission and what we need to do. I really appreciated how every player was really a part of the game, and I think today ended up being a positive experience for us.”
On the difference between the first and second halves:
“We had a consistent amount of points in every quarter tonight, and I don't know if we fell apart in the third quarter or if ASU turned up the heat like they normally do. I think (Katie) Hempen was the difference in the game, and she really hit some difficult shots. They (ASU) are so good and if you give them any room or openings they really bust right through it. I think they looked sharper in the third quarter than us, but I don't think that we necessarily fell apart.”
“Any coach who has a freshman point guard playing against ASU would be okay with five assists and two turnovers. I think she did her job tonight and I think she distributed the ball nicely. There are games in which we really need her and look to her to score, like a Washington where she went 50 percent from three, but ASU is very physical and we needed her to handle the ball, distribute and allow others to score. She handled the pressure well tonight, and she became more of a distributor. Forty-nine points isn't going to win you many games, so she is a capable scoring option but this is the type of game where they are going to take her away, so she needs to be able to find someone later in the possession to score.”
“Gabby was working it really hard, and I didn't expect to have any rustiness coming back. She impacted the game the way she is able to, just flying to get rebounds. She's a big guard that can change the tempo and I thought she had a good all-around game. We think Gabby's capable of a lot of really good things -- three steals, 10 points, six rebounds -- she had a really solid game playing 40 minutes against ASU.”
Freshman Guard Mo Mosley
On her contributions tonight:
“I felt a responsibility to bring my team back in the game because my team was down. Coming out of the second quarter, we needed to get to the basket and the free throw line and so I tried to set an example for my teammates to follow.”
On Mosley's contributions tonight:
“She was a beast tonight so we knew when we gave her the ball she would attack and go off and go take any person that was guarding her. I think today she had an extreme amount of confidence. We love that about her and we would love to see that for every game. Tonight was her night and she showed us what she can do and hopefully she will continue to play that way because I know she can, but she was a beast tonight.”
