Range Leads Cal In Loss To No. 9 Arizona State
BERKELEY --- Junior Courtney Range scored a team-high 14 points to lead the California women's basketball team in a 64-49 loss to No. 9 Arizona State Friday evening at Haas Pavilion.
The forward from Manteca, Calif. led a quartet of Golden Bears in double figures with her 16th game of the season with 10 or more points and her fifth straight in Pac-12 play. Range lived up to her name by going a perfect 3-of-3 from long distance – all in the first quarter - while also hitting 3-of-4 from the free throw line.
Sophomores Mikayla Cowling (11 points) & Gabby Green (10) and freshman MaAne Mosley (10) all bounced back from single-digit efforts against No. 15 Stanford to aid Range's efforts in defeat.
Cal (11-13, 2-11 Pac-12) started the night well, combining with Arizona State (21-4, 12-1 Pac-12) to hit the first four shots of the game and tie the score at 5-5 before a quick 7-2 run gave the Bears a 12-7 edge at the first quarter media timeout (4:54).
ASU came back and took the lead with an 8-0 run of its own before Range's third triple knotted the game again at 15-15.
The Sun Devils would close the quarter with a 14-3 surge and a 21-15 lead, powered by a pair of three-pointers by guard Elisha Davis.
Cowling, Green and Mosley would do the heavy lifting for Cal in the second period as the trio netted all 11 of the Bears' points in the quarter. As a team, Cal held ASU to five points in the period – only the second time all season that the Bears have held an opponent to five or fewer points in a quarter (0 points, 2nd quarter vs Colorado, Jan. 8).
A jumper by Cowling at the 6:36 mark of the third would tie the game at 31 apiece before a 13-0 run over the next three minutes put Arizona State ahead by double figures, where they would stay for much of the remaining time.
Cowling & Green each pulled down a team-best six rebounds to lead the Bears while Green swiped a game-high three steals and freshman Asha Thomas logged a team-high five assists on the evening.
Arizona State was led by guard Katie Hempen's 17 points, forward Kelsey Moos' eight rebounds and Davis' seven assists – all game highs.
