California vs. Arizona Postgame Quotes

Feb. 14, 2016 | Haas Pavilion | Berkeley, Calif.

Head Coach Lindsay Gottlieb

Opening Statement:

“It was a great crowd today and it was really fun to win. Haas is a special place, the energy at the men's game yesterday was incredible and I think it carried over today. I thought the crowd was terrific. I told our players that winning is fun but more how we won and some of the growth that we've seen was evident today. We had a very similar situation in Tucson, where we were kind of hanging on to a lead, five, seven points down there and crumbled a little bit. I found that there wasn't enough separation so I challenged them to step up and change our demeanor and take control of the game and they really did that, I think it's a huge step. I think these two right here – Gabby (Green) and Kristine (Anigwe) -- were tremendous. This was one of Gabby's best all-around games ever. She was in control. Kristine playing through foul trouble, coming back and just having one of her best all-around games. I'm really proud of them both and of the whole team.”

On having Kristine back:

“She's one of the best scorers in the country and there's no doubt about that. I think in some ways it gives us confidence that when she's in foul trouble and sitting down, we've got to find a way that a team is never built around one person. But moreso I thought there was a great energy vibe today. I said the other day, Kristine's an incredible person, and she's having an unreal freshman year so obviously we always want her out there. But I thought the sprit and the energy of the whole team today fed off of that and that's why it was such a good team win.”

On Arizona's performance:

“They're a very aggressive, attacking team and they're athletic. We wanted to force them to shoot contested jumpers and we wanted to rebound a heck of a lot better than we did last time against them. I think it was definitely a concerted effort to make them play on the perimeter. I thought our zone was really good in doing that. I thought our players were committed to not swinging and jumping and playing more disciplined defense.”

Freshman Center Kristine Anigwe:

On her high free throw percentage:

“I just try to calm down when I get to the free throw line, because I know I've had so many repetitions and I also know it's an important part of the game and I just really try to focus when I get to the free throw line.”

On the motivation going into this game:

“Of course, I felt having all of us healthy and strong made a difference and we came today with a purpose and playing together and playing 'Cal basketball' was really important for our preparation and in the end for our win.”

On the mentality in the fourth-quarter playing with four fouls:

“I knew if I didn't do anything out of character that I wouldn't foul again — just making sure I wasn't going out of my comfort zone. So I just ran hard and played aggressive without doing stuff that's out of character.”

Sophomore Guard Gabby Green:

On how today's motivation compared to when they played in Tucson:

“I feel like we grew a lot, because we didn't play our 'Cal basketball' out in Arizona and I know being back here at Haas it felt like we were ourselves again and playing like ourselves again and how we've been practicing. I thought we prepared way better for this game than any other game. I think this game was a showcase of how we can play every game.”

On what was talked about heading into the fourth quarter:

“Today we didn't really have to try to stay together, because we all wanted to beat Arizona and played for the same goal. But in the fourth quarter we talked more about defense and being more active in the zone, because we went with a bigger lineup. It was really effective and we were able to get our hands on a lot of things and get run outs like we like to do.”
