Bilquist Wins 200 Back On Final Day Of Pac-12s
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. – Freshman Amy Bilquist gave the No. 6 Cal women's swimming & diving team another title on the final day of the Pac-12 Championships when she captured the 200 backstroke in a time of 1:49.90, the second-fastest time in the nation this season.
The conference championships came to an end at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center with the Bears finishing in third place with 1,306 points – 38 points behind second-place Stanford. USC won its first-ever Pac-12 title with 1,481 points.
The meet ended with the 400 free relay in which just over a half-second separated the top three teams, with the Bears placing third.
“The last relay really showed how close it was,” Cal coach Teri McKeever said. “It was indicative of three really good programs that are going to be ready to go in a couple weeks (at the NCAA Championships). It would have been nice to get a few more points and close on Stanford, but overall I'm really pleased with how the girls performed.”
Bilquist's win in the 200 back gave the Bears their fourth title during the championship meet. Cal also won the 200 free relay and junior Farida Osman captured the 50 free and 100 butterfly, both in Pac-12 Championship-record times.
Cal ended up going 1-2 in the 200 back as fellow freshman Kathleen Baker took second in a time of 1:50.74. Senior Elizabeth Pelton placed fifth with a mark of 1:52.68.
Osman continued her terrific meet with a second-place finish in the 100 free with a time of 47.20 – the second-fastest mark in the nation this season. Winner Lia Neal of Stanford had the fastest time at 46.97. Senior Rachel Bootsma placed sixth in the 100 free at 48.44.
The Bears also had a strong showing in the 200 butterfly with sophomore Noemie Thomas placing second at 1:53.85 and senior right behind in third at 1:53.98. Junior Celina Li also qualified for the championship final and was eighth at 1:57.99.
Saturday's action will air on the Pac-12 Networks on a tape-delay basis on Sunday at 10 a.m. PT.
