Bears Kick Off Road Trip With Win
BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Day one of a two-meet excursion to Southern California yielded a familiar result for the Cal men's swimming and diving team as the No. 2-ranked Bears showcased their depth to earn a 119-113 victory over host Cal State Bakersfield.
With several of the usual faces swimming a variety of different races, Cal's lineup had a unique look to it Thursday against the Roadrunners. Ryan Murphy, Andrew Seliskar, Josh Prenot and Dillon Williams kicked the day off with a win in the 200 medley relay and the duo of Janardan Burns and Ken Takahashi kept the momentum going with a 1-2 finish in the 1,000 freestyle.
Cal went 1-2 again in the 200 freestyle courtesy of Jacob Pebley and Nick Norman, Williams followed with a winning time of 21.05 in the 50 freestyle and Murphy edged Seliskar to win the 200 IM. Justin Lynch won the 200 butterfly, Tyler Messerschmidt stopped the clock in 45.93 to claim the 100 freestyle and the duo of Prenot and Mike Thomas went 1-2 in the 200 backstroke.
A pair of seniors provided another highlight for the Bears in the 500 freestyle, with Trent Williams winning the race and Jeremie DeZwirek placing second. Cal didn't score the final two events of the day but Seliskar recorded the fastest time in the 200 breaststroke and the team of Lynch, Kyle Coan, Connor Hoppe and Thomas did the same in the 200 freestyle relay.
The win is Cal's 28th straight in dual competition dating back to the 2012-13 season. The Bears return to the pool on Friday at 2 p.m. when they head to Uytengsu Aquatic Center for a showdown with No. 12-ranked USC. The meet will be televised live by Pac-12 Network, Pac-12 Bay Area and Pac-12 Los Angeles.
