Seliskar Wins 200 IM At Pac-12s
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - One day after earning his first Pac-12 title as part of a relay, Cal men's swimmer Andrew Seliskar added an individual crown to an impressive freshman campaign as he won the 200-yard individual medley to provide a highlight on day two of the Pac-12 Championships at the Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center.
Seliskar entered Thursday's night session in the middle of the pool after posting the top time in the morning preliminary and he took the lead right away in the final, jumping out to a lead after two turns. A pair of Stanford swimmers, Gray Umbach and Abrahm DeVine, trailed him closely but Seliskar re-took the advantage on the breaststroke leg and held Umbach off down the stretch to post a time of 1:43.26.
Cal landed podium spots in two other races Thursday, with Justin Lynch placing second in the 50 freestyle in a season-best 19.41. Stanford's Sam Perry earned the win with a time of 19.30 and Cal's Tyler Messerschmidt just missed the podium with a fourth-place finish.
The Bears picked up another second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay as the team of Messerschmidt, Long Gutierrez, Kyle Coan and Lynch clocked a time of 1:17.89 that trailed only Arizona's 1:17.41. And, in the 500 freestyle, Janardan Burns and Ryan Kao each made the A final, finishing fifth and seventh, respectively.
Friday racing in Federal Way will include the 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke and 100 backstroke. Swimming concludes Saturday with the final six events.
