Trio Of Bears Make NWSL Rosters
BERKELEY --- Cal women's soccer alumnae Sam Witteman, Taylor Comeau and Celeste Boureille have all secured their spots on National Women's Soccer League rosters in advance of the 2016 season's opening weekend.
The Orlando Pride made Witteman its first-ever draft pick by taking her with the 10th overall selection in the NWSL Draft. Orlando announced its opening day roster and Witteman's contract signing earlier this week. Witteman will join former Bear legend and NWSL veteran Alex Morgan on the Pride's inaugural squad.
A versatile midfielder, Witteman made at least one start in seven different positions in her senior season with the Golden Bears in 2015. Witteman started all 22 games in her final season at Cal scoring four goals, all of them game-winners, and notching three assists. Her play was rewarded with a NSCAA Third Team All-American and a First Team All-Pac-12 selection.
Also announced within the NWSL was former Bear Taylor Comeau earning a place on the Chicago Red Stars roster. Comeau, who spent time in 2015 with Portland Thorns FC as an amateur call-up, signed with the Red Stars as an preseason invitee. Comeau played for Cal from 2011-2014 and was named to the NSCAA Second-Team and All-Pacific Team during her senior year.
Boureille, who graduated from Cal in 2015, signed with Portland Thorns FC after a strong showing during the preseason. In four seasons (2012-15), Boureille appeared in 84 games for the Golden Bears, tallying 16 goals and eight assists. As a senior last year, Boureille registered five goals and two assists, earning second-team All-Pac 12 accolades as she helped guide California to the NCAA Tournament.
