BERKELEY – Cal head coach Sonny Dykes announced Wednesday that quarterback Davis Webb has enrolled at Cal and joined the school's football program. Webb is a graduate transfer and will be eligible to play his senior season with the Golden Bears in 2016. Webb, who had previously signed a financial aid agreement with Cal, graduated from Texas Tech earlier this month.
“We're thrilled to have Davis enrolled at Cal and part of our football program,” Dykes said. “We're excited to have him join what should be a great quarterback competition. He brings a wealth of experience and maturity to our team, as well as an in-depth understanding of our system having played for three seasons in a similar system at Texas Tech. Our offense is very similar to what he played in at Texas Tech. There is a tremendous amount of crossover with what Texas Tech does under Kliff Kingsbury and what we do with our offensive coordinator Jake Spavital having coached in Kliff's system.”
“I'm excited and grateful to have the opportunity to become a part of the University of California and this football program,” Webb said. “My main two goals are to be a great teammate and a hard worker. I have an extreme love for the game of football and really enjoy being a part of a team. I am looking forward to working with my new teammates to build great relationships, get better every day and achieve success together. I hope to maximize whatever role I play on this team through hard work.”
Webb completed 459-of-747 passes (61.4%) for 5,557 yards with 46 touchdowns and 22 interceptions for a 138.4 passer efficiency rating in 23 games played and 14 starts over the last three seasons at Texas Tech. He ranks eighth among the school's all-time leaders in passing touchdowns, 10th in passing yards and touchdowns responsible for (49), and 11th in passing completions, passing attempts and total offense (5,567).
Webb began his collegiate career with a stellar true freshman season in 2013 when he helped lead Texas Tech to an 8-5 overall record including an upset victory over No. 14 Arizona State in the National University Holiday Bowl. Webb played in 10 games with six starts and threw for 2,718 yards on 226-of-361 passing (62.6%) with 20 touchdowns and nine interceptions for a 139.1 passer efficiency rating. Webb also set seven Big 12 freshman records and four school marks for rookies while he was second in the conference in several categories including passing yards, touchdowns, completions and attempts, all for the highest league rankings ever by a Big 12 freshman. He was also second in the Big 12 in total offense (270.6 ypg) and third in passing efficiency. His 271.8 yards passing per game was 20th overall nationally and third among freshmen.
Webb was an honorable mention Freshman All-American selection of College Football News and won a host of other honors in his 2013 rookie campaign that he capped by earning National University Holiday Bowl Offensive Most Valuable Player recognition after completing 28-of-41 passes for 403 yards with four touchdowns and no interceptions in a 37-23 win over the Sun Devils. Webb threw for over 400 yards on four occasions and over 300 yards six times to set freshman school marks in both categories, including a Big 12 and school freshman record 462 yards at West Virginia.
Webb started his 2014 sophomore campaign on preseason watch lists for the Maxwell Award, the Davey O'Brien Award and Manning Award. He would finish the season completing 211-of-345 passes (61.2%) for 2,539 yards with 24 touchdowns and 13 interceptions for a 138.4 passer efficiency mark. His 317.4 passing yards per game led the Big 12 and ranked sixth nationally while his 24 scoring throws were third in the conference and 20th in the country. He was also second in the league with an average of 319.4 yards of total offense per contest.
Webb was limited to five games off the bench as a 2015 junior, completing 22-of-41 passes for 300 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions for a 131.22 passer efficiency rating.
Webb prepped at Prosper High School in Texas, where he was an honorable mention All-State and first-team All-District selection who guided his 2012 senior squad to the Class 4A Division II Regional semifinals while throwing for 2,658 yards and 23 touchdowns on 210-of-359 passing. He also earned All-District recognition as a 2011 junior when he completed 200-of-378 passes for 2,682 yards with 26 touchdowns.
