RIO DE JANEIRO – Within seconds of the United States touching first in women's 800-meter free relay to earn the Olympic gold medal, Missy Franklin sent out a tweet:

The former Golden Bear swimmer helped Team USA earn the top seed in the evening final by swimming a strong leg during the afternoon prelims. As a result, she picked up her fifth career gold medal and added to Cal's collection so far in these Games.

Franklin was not the only Bear in the water Wednesday, as incoming freshman Abbey Weitzeil secured her spot in the 100-meter free final with a time of 53.53 in her semifinal heat. She'll enter Thursday's race as the eighth seed and will be seeking her second medal after helping the U.S. to silver in the 400 free relay earlier in the week.

In addition to Weitzeil, Franklin will compete in the 200 backstroke and Lauren Boyle will swim the 800 free for New Zealand on Thursday.
