SANTA CLARA, CALIF. --- In its first Top 25 test of the young season, the No. 18 California women's soccer team was upset in heartbreaking fashion, falling 1-0 in 2OT to No. 21 Santa Clara Sunday afternoon at SCU's Stevens Stadium.
Cal (1-1) matched up extremely well against the Broncos (2-0) and were able to dominate possession for the majority of the contest. Playing with a more consistent assertiveness than in its opener against Cal Poly on Friday, the Bears were able to string together several quality chances on the offensive end. Cal outshot Santa Clara 9-8 (including 6-4 on shots on goal) and had twice as many corner (6) than their hosts (3). However, the difference in the game came down to Santa Clara capitalizing on a late opportunity when the Bears were unable to.
The deciding goal came in the 107th minute, with the match seemingly headed toward a draw for both teams. Santa Clara's Jenna Roering was able to gain possession in Cal's defensive third, advance into the 18-yard box and put a ball past junior goalkeeper
Emily Boyd to end the contest. The game-winner from the Broncos was surprising considering the exceptional play of Boyd (three saves) and the Bears' back line throughout the match.
