Former Golden Bear Named To Executive Post

BERKELEY - Former Cal bullpen standout Matt Swanson has been named director of amateur scouting by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, the club announced Wednesday.

Swanson, who pitched at Cal from 2002 to 2005, has worked in the St. Louis Cardinals organization since 2008, first as an area scout and then as the Midwest cross-checker. The Cardinals credited Swanson as the signing scout for notable Major League contributors Stephen Piscotty, Kolten Wong and Marco Gonzales. As one of his first priorities with the Angels, he will be tasked with coordinating and leading Anaheim's efforts in the 2017 Major League Baseball first-year player draft.

"We are excited to add someone with Matt's resume, depth, and passion to our department," said Angels general manager Billy Eppler in a statement issued to media. "He has a clear vision with practical knowledge, and he is a welcome addition to our front office."

As a Golden Bear, Swanson used his final two seasons in Berkeley to make a significant impact out of head coach David Esquer's bullpen. As a junior in 2004, he made 30 appearances and compiled a 2.97 ERA in 39.3 innings pitched. He returned for his senior season in 2005 and earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention thanks to a 6-3 record and 1.66 ERA in 30 games.

Swanson was selected by Pittsburgh in the 13th round of the 2005 draft and went on to pitch for three seasons in the Pirates' organization. He is a native of Los Gatos, Calif.
