Bears Earn First Win in 3-1 Rout of Fairfield

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – California field hockey is in the win column for the first time all season with a 3-1 rout of Fairfield (1-4) in the third-place game of the Terrapin Invitational on Sunday at the Maryland Field Hockey Complex. Cal improves to 1-4 this season.

The Golden Bears saw goals from three different players, including sophomore Katrina Carter's first collegiate goal. Despite 14 shots from the Fairfield offense, Cal's defense shut down the Stags' chances with eight saves from goalkeeper Kori Griswold.

Sophomore Melina Moore, who was the lone Bear to score in Saturday's matchup with Maryland, started the Bears off with a goal in the 18th minute, flipping in the ball from right in front of the goal.

Less than three minutes later, senior Monica Marrazzo sent a ball to Carter at the near post for Carter's first career goal.

Though Fairfield outshot Cal 6-5 and led 5-1 in corners in the first half, the Bears led 2-0 following Griswold's four first-half saves.

The Golden Bear offense didn't let up in the second half, scoring their third goal of the game within two minutes. Sophomore Janaye Sakkas notched her second goal of the season after sending a loose airborne ball into the cage.

The Stags saved themselves from a shutout with Ann Burgoyne's goal at 68:05, a hard shot from the top of the circle.

Fairfield again led Cal in shots in the second half, 8-6, finishing with a 14-11 advantage and 7-3 lead in corners. Fairfield keeper Caitlin Bennett saved four of Cal's seven shots on goal.
