The Cal volleyball team kicks off Pac-12 play this week with its usual conference opener against rival Stanford. This will one of two versions of the "Big Spike" this season, as the Bears will also face off against the Cardinal to close the season on Nov. 25. Cal has lost eight in a row to Stanford, but before that had a four-match win streak. The Ducks feature their usual high-powered offense that ranks third in the country with a .312 hitting percentage. The Bears will be looking to snap a five-match losing streak against Oregon.

HAMMERIN' HAYNES
Outside hitter Maddie Haynes made a few folks sit up and take notice with her performance during Saturday's win over Saint Mary's. Not only did the freshman from Rocklin, Calif., set a career-high with 18 kills, she came up with a handful of clutch kills late in the match to carry the Bears to the win. Eleven of her kills came during the final two sets, and she had Cal's final four kills of the match to close it out. Haynes has played in every match this season, appearing in 31 of a possible 39 sets. She ranks fourth on the team at 2.69 kills per set.

SAVANNAH'S STORY
Cal's Savannah Rennie is back practicing in full capacity with the Golden Bears just four months after undergoing a liver transplant at the Indiana University Transplant Center. Diagnosed last Septemer with Congential Hepatic Fibrosis with Portal Hypertension, Rennie received the transplant in May and returned to Berkeley by the start of training camp at the beginning of August. After initially practicing in just limited fashion, the redshirt sophomore was recently cleared to practice in full capacity. There is no timetable yet for her return to a match. Rennie was PrepVolleyball.com's No. 20 Senior Ace from Torrey Pines HIgh School in San Diego and graduated early to enroll at Cal in the spring semester of 2015. But she became ill that summer and was finally diagnosed with the ailment last September.

RISING UP
Senior libero Maddy Kerr became just the third player in Cal volleyball history to register 1,500 career digs during Friday's match at Pacific. She is now in third place on Cal's all-time digs list with 1,522 and needs 81 more to move into second. .Jillian Davis is Cal's all-time leader in digs with 1,810 in her career. Kerr ranks third in the Pac-12 with 4.62 digs per set. She is the daughter of Golden State Warriors coach Steve Kerr. 

JENSEN LENDS A HAND
Senior Alyssa Jensen has been one of the most prolific setters in the nation so far this season. Jensen leads the Pac-12 in assist average at 11.54, which also is good for eighth in the country. Jensen also has the top-two single-match assist marks in the Pac-12 this season and the most in a three-set match.  Her 64-assist effort against Northeastern is the best in the conference this year.

KERR MAKES MARK IN CLASSROOM
Senior Maddy Kerr became just the second Cal volleyball student-athlete ever to earn Pac-12 All-Academic First Team honors last season. Kerr has a cumulative GPA of 3.76 while double-majoring in Media Studies and Rhetoric. She was Pac-12 All-Academic honorable mention as a sophomore.
