Bears Fall On Road To No. 24 Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. – Senior Jenelle Jordan had 11 kills at a .308 hitting percentage but the Cal volleyball team fell to No. 24 Oregon on Friday night, 25-21, 25-17, 25-19 at Matthew Knight Arena.

Junior Christine Alftin added seven kills and six digs and freshman Maddie Haynes also had seven kills for the Bears (6-6, 0-2 Pac-12). Senior Maddy Kerr had 12 digs.

The Bears fell behind 19-13 in the first set but almost came all the way back. Cal trimmed the deficit to 20-17, and after the Ducks scored a point, the Bears notched three points in a row on kills by Alftin and sophomore Belen Castillo and a ball handling error on Oregon. The Ducks scored two in a row to push the advantage back to three points, but Cal answered on a kill by freshman Bailee Huizenga. Oregon then scored back-to-back points to close out the set.

In each of the final two sets, the Bears fell behind by a significant margin but came back to make it closer late, especially in the third. After falling behind 20-10 in the second set, Cal scored six of the next nine points to make it 23-16. But the teams then exchanged points to take command.

The Bears were once again behind big in the third set at 19-12 but came back to make it 22-16. Two kills by Jordan and a hitting error by Oregon cut the deficit further to 22-19. The Ducks called timeout and responded with back-to-back points and finally polished off the match.

Huizenga finished with six kills and senior setter Alyssa Jensen had 29 assists.

Cal is back on the road next Thursday at No. 4 Washington.
