Former Bear to Take Helm of LA Galaxy II

BERKELEYCalifornia men's soccer alumnus, Mike Muñoz has been named LA Galaxy II Head Coach, the club announced recently.

Muñoz, who attended Cal 2000-2004, takes over as Los Dos head coach in the United Soccer League (USL) after spending time as a coach and the Director of the LA Galaxy Academy, which he helped develop into one of the most successful in Major League Soccer, with 14 Academy products signed across LA Galaxy and LA Galaxy II.

"It's been a great start to the new year with Cal Soccer alums," said 17-year head coach of the Golden Bears Kevin Grimes. "We are very proud of Mike being named head coach of the LA Galaxy II.  He has worked very hard with the LA Galaxy Academy youth teams over the years and his work has paid off for him.  With Mike's appointment, our three Cal alums at the current USMNT camp and two MLS signees we are having an amazing 2017 thus far."

A native of Bellflower, Calif., Muñoz earned All-Pac-10 Second Team honors as a freshman and All-Pac-10 First Team honors during both his sophomore and junior season.

"Cal Soccer and Coach Grimes will always remain one of the most important parts of my development in the game of soccer and who I am now as a man," Muñoz said. "I was part of Coach Grimes' first recruiting class when he took over the program and the freshmen class was able to create four years of wonderful memories and more importantly change the culture to what Cal Soccer represents today. I am proud to call myself a Golden Bear and a huge reason I am the LA Galaxy II Head Coach today is because this is where my foundation was laid."
