BERKELEY - Cal sophomore point guard Asha Thomas scored a career-high 24 points on Sunday afternoon as the Golden Bears snapped their three-game home losing streak with a 71-60 win over Arizona at Haas Pavilion. Thomas scored 17 of her game-high 24 points in the second half as Cal (15-5, 3-5 Pac-12) erased a six-point deficit to earn its first conference home win of the year. The Wildcats (11-8, 2-6 Pac-12) have now lost 10 straight on the road to the Bears and 20 of the last 21 meetings overall between the teams.
After a sloppy first half that saw Cal commit 10 turnovers, Thomas and the Bears got to work in the second half, opening the third quarter on a 9-2 run. The East Oakland native scored or assisted on 17 of Cal's 19 third-quarter points and missed just two shot attempts the entire second half, going 3-4 from the floor and 9-10 from the foul line. Thomas - the Pac-12 leader with a 2.74 assist-to-turnover ratio - dished out four assists with only one turnover while also going 3-5 from beyond the arc.
"It's tremendous what she's doing," said Cal head coach Lindsay Gottlieb. "I thought Asha was really, really phenomenal as a leader today, talking the whole time and being aggressive when it was time to be aggressive. She made a lot of plays today and produced when we really needed her."
It was just the second 20-point performance of Thomas' career, but she got plenty of help on the offensive end with three other Bears reaching double-figures. Sophomore center Kristine Anigwe, who was held to a career-low eight points in Friday night's loss to No. 18 Arizona State, had 14 points and eight rebounds while dishing out a season-high three assists. Mikayla Cowling and Mi'Cole Cayton both chipped in 10 points apiece as the Bears improved to 8-3 on the season at home.
Sunday's win marked the first time since Cal's 74-64 win over Arizona on December 29 that the Bears have scored more than 70 points. Cal was held to a season-low 45 points on Friday against the Sun Devils.Â
Defensively, the Bears forced the Wildcats into nine turnovers in the second half, outscoring Arizona 15-5 on points off turnovers after the break.Â
The Bears will look to carry their momentum up the Pacific coastline, visiting No. 8 Washington on Friday, January 27 at 6 pm PT. The Huskies are 7-1 in Pac-12 play, coming off an 87-44 win over Washington State in which senior forward Chantel Osahor had a conference-record 30 rebounds. Washington is led by senior guard Kelsey Plum, the leading scorer in the nation at 31.0 points per game and the only player, man or woman, in Pac-12 history with 3,000 career points.Â
