MVP Davis Webb Lifts South To Senior Bowl Victory
Former Golden Bear Leads South To Scores On Each Of His Three Series
MOBILE, Ala. – Quarterback
Davis Webb earned MVP honors Saturday at the 68th annual Reese's Senior Bowl by leading the South to a 16-15 victory over the North at Ladd-Peebles Stadium. Webb completed 11-of-16 passes for 165 yards and one touchdown while leading the South to scores on each of the three series he played.
"I'm extremely honored to receive the MVP award from the Senior Bowl," Webb said. "The past winners show how very special it is. I want to thank Phil Savage and his crew, the Cleveland Browns' staff, and my Cal teammates and former coaches for the texts and for believing in me. It might have been the last time I wear a Cal helmet in a game. It's a sad feeling, but I'm excited to see the 2017 Cal team led by coach Wilcox."
After entering the game for the first time with 6:28 remaining in second quarter and the South trailing, 3-0, Webb engineered an eight-play, 76-yard drive that was capped by the game's first touchdown when he connected with Josh Reynolds for a 39-yard scoring strike. Webb was 5-of-6 for 95 yards on the drive. A two-point conversion failed and the South led 6-3.
The South got the ball back with 1:03 to go in the first half on the 40-yard line of the North after Donnel Pumphrey's 24-yard punt return. Webb completed two-of-three passes for 21 yards to set up a 37-yard field goal by Jake Elliott with 0:06 remaining to give the South a 9-3 halftime lead.
Webb's final drive of the game was 16 plays for 80 yards to open the second half. Webb completed 4-of-6 passes for 49 yards on the drive that ended with Matt Dayes' two-yard touchdown rush and a Jake Elliott extra point to put the South ahead, 16-3.
Webb became the third Cal player to win the game's MVP honors following fellow former Golden Bears' quarterbacks Steve Bartkowksi (1975) and Pat Barnes (1997). He was the 36th former Cal player selected to participate in the annual contest that showcases college football's top seniors with defensive tackle
Deandre Coleman the most recent in 2014.
Webb was also named the Senior Bowl's top quarterback Practice Player of the Week heading into Saturday's contest.
