PULLMAN, Wash. – Despite 32 points from sophomore center Kristine Anigwe, Cal could not overcome an inspired effort by Washington State, falling to the Cougars, 84-79, Sunday afternoon at Beasley Coliseum. The Golden Bears (15-7, 3-7 Pac-12) have now lost back-to-back games and three straight on the road while the Cougars (9-12, 4-6 Pac-12) snapped a four game skid of their own.
Anigwe, the 2016 USBWA National Freshman of the Year, went 13-19 from the floor and was a perfect 6-6 from the foul line in her fourth 30-point performance of the season. The sophomore center now has seven career 30-point games, the second-most by any player in Cal women's basketball history.
Senior forward Courtney Range added 13 points and six rebounds for the Bears, while freshman center CJ West matched her career high with 10 points, going 3-3 from the floor and 4-5 from the foul line in just 10 minutes of action.
Washington State jumped out to an early 6-0 before the Bears' offense came alive late in the first period, taking their first lead of the night with a 10-2 run late in the first quarter. Range, who scored just seven points in Friday's loss to Washington, scored seven of her 13 points in the opening period.
Anigwe got to work in the second stanza, scoring 10 points as the Bears led by as many as eight points early in the second quarter. However the Cougars clawed back, trimming the Bears' lead to one at halftime. The tightly-contested affair saw 20 lead changes, including 15 in the third quarter alone.
Washington State pulled away early in the fourth quarter, taking a four-point advantage on an Alexys Swedlund three-pointer with 8:23 left to play. Swedlund led Washington State with 18 points off the bench as the Cougars had five different players score in double-figures. The win was Washington State's first victory over the Bears in a regular season game since February 2011. Cal has won eight of the last ten meetings between the teams and leads the all-time series 43-23.
As a team, the Bears struggled from three, going 1-10 from beyond the arc. Range hit Cal's only triple of the game with six seconds left to play, cutting Washington State lead to 83-79. However, Washington State connected on both free throw attempts to put the game out of reach.
Cal outscored Washington State 50-46 in the paint, but the Cougars held a 17-11 advantage on offensive rebounds, outscoring the Cal 17-13 on second-change points.
Cal returns to Berkeley for a five-game homestand, hosting No. 13 UCLA on Friday, February 3, at 8 pm PT. Two of the three meetings between the Bears and Bruins last season went to overtime, including a 73-67 UCLA overtime victory in the semifinals of the Pac-12 Tournament. Friday's game will be broadcast live on Pac-12 Networks with special programming throughout the game as Cal and the conference celebrate the Lunar New Year.
