Lorenzo Alexander Named Pro Bowl Defensive MVP
Linebacker Becomes Second Player In Cal History To Win A Pro Bowl MVP Honor
ORLANDO – Former Cal football player Lorenzo Alexander capped off an incredible 2016 NFL season Sunday when he was named the Defensive MVP of the 2017 Pro Bowl in the AFC's 20-13 victory over the NFC. Alexander preserved the AFC win when he picked off Kirk Cousins at the AFC two-yard line with just over one minute to play. He finished the contest with a game-high nine tackles to go along with the interception and one pass breakup.
Alexander became only the second former Cal football player and the first on defense to win the honor following late running back Chuck Muncie, who earned the honor for the NFC in a 37-27 victory over the AFC on January 27, 1980.
The 33-year-old Alexander was playing in his second career Pro Bowl and his first as a position player after registering his best season in the league playing for the Buffalo Bills in 2016 in his 12th NFL campaign. He recorded career highs in nearly every category including tackles (76), sacks (12.5), passes defended (6) and forced fumbles (3). He also recorded his first career interception that he returned 28 yards and started all 16 games for the first time in his career.
