Cal Trio Called to US National Team Camp
BERKELEY – A trio of Golden Bears were called up to the U.S. Men's National Team January Camp by USMNT head coach Bruce Arena, announced U.S. Soccer on Thursday. Of the 32 camp invitees, California's threesome is the most from any college in the nation.
Former Cal defender Steve Birnbaum (2009-2013) and goalie David Bingham (2008-2010) are returnees to the national camp, while goalie Stefan Frei (2005-2008) will participate for the first time. Frei has had an unprecedented season picking up his first MLS Cup MVP honor after leading the Seattle Sounders FC to an MLS Cup title in December.
"This is a great moment in Cal soccer history that we have three players named to the USMNT," said Bears head coach
Kevin Grimes. "Cal having more players than any other college team in the country is a testament to our team's culture, tradition in player development and resiliency to push players skill level to their highest limits. There are many proud Cal soccer alums out there today. We also are very pleased to see Cal represented so well at the U.S. National Team level."
The camp will begin on Jan. 10 at StubHub Center in Carson, California.
